A ROSE AMONG THE BLOOMS

ORGANISERS of the annual Autumn Flower Show held last weekend described this year’s event as an ‘absolute success’.

The show, hosted by the Cootamundra Garden Club, saw a record amount of more than 400 entries filling the Town Hall with lots of colour, styles and different varieties of flowers and plants.

Once again it was estimated that hundreds of local garden enthusiasts of all ages attended the show.

Joint Show Secretary Jenny Cash said, that despite the difficult season for flowers such as dahlias and roses, each of the categories were well supported by exhibitors.

“A lot of entries were received in the Autumn Leaves Category and the new Fruit and Vegetable and Pot Plant section were well supported,” Mrs Cash said.

The show was officially opened by Cootamundra Men’s Shed member Earl Phillips, who is also a member of the Cootamundra Garden Club.

Judges of the show were garden enthusiasts Keith Brew of Canberra, Glen Sheldrick of Yass and Gen Neilon of Grenfell who were looking for the conditions of the plants, grooming and standard sizing.

This year’s show received 91 rose entries, 81 chrysanthemum section entries, 57 entries in the floral art and decorative section, 44 pot plant exhibits, 59 miscellaneous entries, 20 fruit and vegetable entries and 21 dahlia exhibits.

For the first time this year, which proved a novelty among all in attendance, was a giant pumpkin weight guessing competition.

The giant pumpkin, which was announced as weighing a whopping 42.10 kilograms, was donated to the Garden Club by Eddie Jarrott of Temora Street.

Winners of the sections were presented with monetary prizes.
