“OVERWHELMING”
IT WAS the only word Doug Tozer could use to describe the response to Sunday’s McGrath Foundation Charity Golf day held at the Cootamundra Golf Club.
The course was overflowing with players during the day, while it was standing room only inside the club at the end of play as a crowd of more than 200 came together to support such a worthy cause.
And support the cause they did, with in excess of $12,000 raised on the day, a figure that will go
directly to the McGrath Foundation for the
continuation of research into breast cancer.
The day doubled as the Libby Brooker Memorial, in recognition of a lady who gave so much to her
community before losing her battle with breast cancer last year.
Libby’s husband John addressed the crowd prior to the presentations of awards, stating everything involved with the day had been remarkable.
“It has been a great day and we’ve been lucky enough to raise a significant amount of money for the foundation,” Mr Brooker said.
“If that money can help prevent a few ladies from going through what my wife went through it would be excellent.”
Doug Tozer, who along with his wife Barb, were two of the driving forces of the event, echoed Mr Brooker’s thoughts.
“We have been overwhelmed by everything in relation to the day,” Mr Tozer said.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better response and we well and truly exceeded our expectations.
“To have the field booked out three and a half weeks before the event was an amazing response.
“The generosity of our sponsors, the players
themselves and everyone who brought raffle tickets or purchased items in the auction have combined for a very positive outcome.
“It is a tribute to the Brooker family that so many people are here today to support John and his family.”
One of the special guests on Sunday included
former Miss World Belinda Green.
Expressing her gratitude in being invited to such a special day, Ms Green told the audience the night she was crowned Miss World in the USA Gough Whitlam was being sworn in as Australia’s Prime Minister.
“My reign certainly went better than his,” Ms Green joked.
Confessing she is anything but a golfing
enthusiast, Ms Green said she had only played twice before, both in charity days.
“And neither association has asked me back,” she said.
On a serious note, Ms Green said she was thrilled to be part of the day.
“I am most certainly here to support the cause,” she said.
“Every single one of us has been touched by cancer at some stage.”
